Doctor of Chiropractic, Michele Oman, is passionate about human movement and motor skills, music, literature, DIY and nutrition. In this his latest blog he details his journey into leaky gut and how to heal it with bone broth.
As chiropractors we are always looking to perfect the way the body works in order to feel better and better. We are not satisfied with a normal state of being we want to speed up the healing process as much as we can! For this reason we normally recommend few supplements during the first phase of care (mainly anti inflammatory like omega 3, vit. D, vit. B’s, turmeric etc) and a better balanced diet (increasing vegetables, healthy saturated fats and superfoods in general).
What happens though, when a life of junk food, antibiotics and alcohol has influenced your intestine so much? It more often than not, creates a general gut irritation, which then doesn’t permit straightforward absorption- maybe even a leak of some nutrients back into the bloodstream “leaky gut syndrome.” Leaky gut syndrome could even mean by-products of digestion (toxins that should be on the way out!) gets leaked, back into the blood stream, to travel around your body. Read here more on ‘leaky gut syndrome’.
You have to make sure that you intestine is ready for a change in diet and apparently what works miracles is good old fashioned granny’s recipe of bone broth! This wondrous miracle broth helps get nutrients into your system- nutrients that you never usually get (collagen, glucosamine, cartilage, bone, bone marrow and so on…).
Here is a basic recipe for creating your own bone broth:
Take 2 kg of bones from an organic grass fed animal (chicken, cow, etc.)
- Let it sit in 4l of filtered water and two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar for 30 mins
- Add 2 chopped organic celery stalks, 2 chopped organic carrots and 1 chopped organic onion and bring to boil!
- Cover and let it simmer for 24 hours
- Add salt and parsley at the end
- You can keep it in the fridge for a week and in the freezer for months!
Bone broth helps the body reduce inflammation and infections, plus promotes healthy bones, nails and hair. It may also help heal and tighten up intestine wall junctions and reduce leaky gut syndrome.
